The Bir Hakeim bridge was built in the years 1903-1905 after a request had been made for its construction as an adjunct of the Universal Exposition of 1900. For many years it was called the Passy Viaduct, but in 1949 was renamed as a tribute to General Koenig's June 1942 victory in Libya.
