Ce pont se situe à l'un des emplacements historiques de traversée de la Seine. Tout commence dès l'Antiquité avec le Grand-Pont, puis le pont "des Planches" au IXème siècle. Après la disparition de ce dernier, le premier pont Notre-Dame est érigé en 1413 et remplacé par un second en 1507 (qui fut un endroit de commerce fervent). Un nouveau pont apparait en 1853, puis transformé en 1919 (arche métallique centrale) donnant lieu au pont actuel. Voir aussi le Petit Pont.
Like the Petit Pont, this bridge is at one of the most ancient and historic crossing-places on the Seine. It links the Right Bank with the Isle de la Cité. In ancient times there was the 'Grand Pont' (Big Bridge) then in the IXth century the 'Pont des Planches' (Plank Bridge). After it disappeared, the first 'Pont de Notre Dame' was built in 1413, nearly 200 years after the construction of the cathedral had begun. In 1507 a new bridge was put in place and soon became the site of bustling trade. In 1853 it was replaced, and in 1919 the stone central span was replaced by steel, giving the bridge its current aspect.
